Ayurveda explained

For anyone new to it

Ayurveda in plain words

Ayurveda is one of the oldest systems of healing in the world. You do not need to know a single Sanskrit word to feel the good of it. Here is the short version.

The idea

Balance, not treatment of one thing

Ayurveda comes from India and goes back thousands of years. Its idea is simple: you are well when body, mind and daily life are in balance, and out of sorts when they are not.

Instead of treating one symptom, it looks at the whole of you, your build, your energy, your sleep, your digestion, and gently nudges things back into balance. Warm oil, massage, herbs, rest. Nothing extreme, nothing quick.

Indian spices and herbs, turmeric, chilli and star anise

Vata, air and movement

Quick, creative, easily cold and easily tired. Vata does well with warmth, oil and routine.

Pitta, fire and focus

Sharp, driven, runs warm. Pitta does well with cooling, calm and a slower pace.

Kapha, earth and calm

Steady, patient, holds on to weight and habit. Kapha does well with movement and warmth that wakes things up.

Your first visit

What a first visit looks like

  1. 1

    A warm welcome

You arrive, we make tea, and you sit for a few minutes. No rush, no forms to hurry through.

  2. 2

    A free consultation

We spend 15 minutes talking about how you feel, sleep and eat, and work out which dosha leads in you.

  3. 3

    Your treatment

You move to a private room. We explain each step, then begin. Warm oil, quiet, unhurried.

  4. 4

    Rest and tea

When it ends, you rest. We bring herbal tea and let you come back to the day in your own time.

Honest answers

Questions people ask

Is Ayurveda religious?

No. It grew up alongside Indian culture, but our treatments are bodywork and rest, open to anyone of any faith or none.

Is it a massage or a medicine?

The treatments we offer are massage and warm oil work for wellbeing and relaxation. We are not a medical clinic and we do not diagnose or treat illness. If something is wrong, please see your doctor.

Do I need to know my dosha before I come?

Not at all. The free consultation on your first visit is where we work it out together.

How often should I come?

Some people come for a single treat, others make it a monthly ritual. We will suggest a rhythm, never push one.
